Corrosion control for a greener world

– A short course on theory and practice

23 & 24 January 2023
Technical University of Denmark
Meeting Center, Room S02 and S04
Anker Engelunds Vej 1
2800 Lyngby

The idea of this corrosion course is to provide a good theoretical and practical understanding of corrosion, and how corrosion can be identified, monitored, and controlled using a combination of lectures and hands-on experimental sessions.

Hence the course will be suitable both for research students as well as for persons employed in the industry involved in material related aspects, material selection, and corrosion issues at a product level, corrosion prediction and control. The level of the course will be preliminary to medium so that it will be suitable for both beginners and those who wish to enhance their knowledge on corrosion in practice.

Each theory part of the course will be complimented with practical exercises and case studies. The course will also elaborate on how corrosion is important in relation to green transition where efficient material selections are needed for efficient products by lower material loss and less contamination of the environment.

A preliminary listing of programme for the course will be the following, although it might be subjected to some modifications.

23 January – Course Day 1:

(Course start 10:00)

Lecture 1: Introduction to corrosion and need of corrosion control in today’s sustainable world

Lecture 2: Fundamentals of corrosion theory and engineering: Thermodynamics of corrosion in practical sense

  • This part will introduce bit of thermodynamic theory behind corrosion. Theoretical part will be explained with practical connections including the use of Pourbaix diagram as thump rule for material selection.

Break: 11:30 – 11:40

Lecture 3: Fundamentals of corrosion theory and engineering: Kinetics of corrosion in practical sense

  • This lecture will focus on corrosion kinetics theory and importance of various parameters affecting corrosion rate. Importance of cathodic reactions and characteristics of metal/alloy will be described, and connection to practical issues.

Lunch (12:30 – 13:30)

Classroom practical session I: Hands on experimental trials and exercises for understanding corrosion theory

  • Aim of this practical session will be to conduct practical exercises on potential measurements (electrochemical measurements) and correlating them to corrosion theory learned above, and learning how these measurement data can be used for practical applications in selecting materials.

Lecture 4: Different forms of corrosion and importance in engineering applications – Part I

  • This lecture will explain different forms of corrosion by detailed description of degradation mechanisms. Connection to engineering applications will be emphasized by showing examples of failures from actual applications.

Break (14:50-15:00)

Classroom practical session II:

  • This short practical session will follow the above lecture to get hands-on experience on different corrosion failed objects failed due to above mentioned corrosion forms (Part I)

Lecture 5: Different forms of corrosion and importance in engineering applications – Part II

  • Continuation of theory behind different forms of corrosion.

Classroom practical session III:

  • Continuation of hands-on experience of degraded parts due to different corrosion types.

Day 1 conclusion session: Summary of lectures, descussion and kahoot session
This part will provide short summary of learnings from Day I followed by discussion. Also, a Kahoot session to review the learnings.

(End of course 17:00. Dinner dinner at Restaurant Fortunen at 18:00 – if you register for that)

24 January – Course Day 2:

(Course start 08:30)

Lecture 6: Short overview of corrosion in various technological sectors and green transition requirements

  • This lecture will overview corrosion issues in various technological sectors due to various materials use. Lecture will also cover how corrosion is a challenging issue when using greener materials such as recycled alloys and the need to address such issues.

Lecture 7: Atmospheric corrosion of metals/alloys, importance of atmospheric conditions, and corrosion classes

  • This lecture will address atmospheric corrosion, testing, and monitoring methods. Also importance of atmospheric conditions such as humidity and contaminations including discussion on corrosion classes.

Break (10:00 – 10:10)

Lecture 8:Various methods for corrosion testing

  • This lecture will comprehensively look at corrosion test, however with an emphasis on practical applications.

Classroom practical session IV: Hands on trial of corrosion testing – Part I

  • Aim of the practical session is to provide hand on expertise on various corrosion testing methods such as Potentiodynamic Polarization, Linear Polarization, and Electrochemical Impedance spectroscopy.

Lunch (12:00 – 13:00)

Classroom practical session V: Evaluation of experimental results from Session IV

  • Continuation of the Part I session on testing and monitoring. This session will be to evaluate results from previous practical session and learning how to calculate various corrosion related parameters from electrochemical curves.

Lecture 9: Proactive corrosion prevention: By alloy design and pro-active design strategy

  • Summarizing from the above lectures, this lecture will focus on showing some case studies and examples of pro-active corrosion prevention strategy based on proper material selection and design changes.

Lecture 10: Proactive corrosion control: Coating and control of environment, and shift to greener technologies

  • Coatings are important for corrosion protection. However, coating also needs to be green for the sustainable world. This lecture provides a summary of the environmental issues related to coatings, and shift to greener coatings and challenges.

Break (14:50 – 15:00)

Final concluding session

  • Overall summary of course, discussion, and Kahoot session
This part will provide short summary of learnings from Day 2 followed by discussion. Also, Kahoot session to review the learnings.

(End of course 15:40)
