Course:
A practical introduction
to properties and processing
of thermoplastic polymers

The wonderful world of Plastics

2 October 2024

Technical University of Denmark
Anker Englunds vej 1
2800 Lyngby
Meeting Center, building 101, room S10

Registration deadline 21 September 2024.

Get a comprehensive introduction to polymers, their behavior, the basics of processing along with environmental aspects at this new course (BIMS-0), which is ideal for newcomers in the field of plastics (freshly out of school or switching jobs from a non-plastic related activity).

The course will explore polymers and plastics innovative and practical applications, giving the participants an understanding of the unique chemistry and structural intricacies defining polymer behavior. Furthermore the course will explore the art of selecting the right plastic for any application,  give an introduction to critical factors that influence performance and durability and will cover base data about thermal and electrical behavior, where polymers reveal their remarkable adaptability and versatility in various environments.

We will also closely examine the mechanical response and flow properties of thermoplastics, providing invaluable knowledge crucial for the diverse applications across industries.

Course sessions:

  • Introduction
  • Basic definitions, chemistry and structure of Polymers
  • Selecting the right plastic for the job
  • Thermal and electrical behavior and properties
  • Basic mechanical response of thermo-plastics
  • Flow properties of molten thermoplastics
  • Processing of thermoplastics
  • Additives and Reinforcements in plastics
  • Ageing and degradation of plastics
  • Sustainability and recycling aspects

Preparation for advanced courses

This course will perfectly prepare you for the more advanced courses “Understanding Injection Molding of Thermoplastics” (BIMS-1) or “Understanding Mechanical Properties of Thermoplastics” (BIMS-2) that we present each year.

Who should participate
Whether you are an experienced technician moving into plastics, a curious enthusiast, a young engineer or a researcher, BIMS-0 promises a course filled with discovery, networking, and inspiration.

The instructor – Vito Leo
Vito Leo, a physicist with over 40 years of experience in Polymer Processing, will lead the course. His expertise in Injection Molding of Thermoplastics and Finite Element Numerical Simulation makes him a valuable resource. Currently a Professor at Université Libre de Bruxelles, Vito Leo teaches an introductory course in Polymer Processing to Engineering Faculty students.
