Course scope/about the course
The objective of the course is to enable the attendees to use the capabilities of precision machining processes to produce complex components with high accuracy and very fine functional surfaces. Attendees will learn about state of the art solutions for precision machining including precision machine tools, thermal and mechanical errors, machining strategies, advanced analytical modelling tools, error suppression and error compensation strategies. During the course attendees will be introduced to the remote use of software tools for prediction of geometry and topography of machined surfaces. The course centres on developing a comprehensive understanding of the necessary conditions, tools and methods of Precision Machining and introducing the basics of Zero Defect Digital Manufacturing.

Course highlights/content

  • Processes based on material removal,
  • Machining process configurations,
  • Controllable process parameters and part quality characteristics,
  • Mechanics of Machining,
  • Calculation of cutting forces in complex machining operations
  • Tool and machining system deflection and compensation,
  • Edge radius effect on machining operations
  • User friendly modelling tools for prediction of:
    • Part 1: Surface Geometry,
    • Part 2: Surface Topography,
  • Machine tool mechanical and thermal errors
