Right now polymer tribology is highly affected by the approaching banning of Teflon and other PFAS related materials. These are known for low friction and wear. This is why several of the talks at this ATV-SEMAPP seminar describe how PFAS could be substituted by more environmental friendly compounds.
Otherwise the basics of polymer tribology are worth remembering as they in fact define the success of your product outcome. A simple mistake, and you will be struggling with challenges that are irreversible.

Polymer tribology fundamentals Ion Marius Sivebæk, Associate Professor, DTU Construct & Materials Specialist (Tribology), Novo Nordisk A/S Tribology is the science and technology of two surfaces in contact and relative sliding. Polymers behave quite differently than metals when it comes to tribology. The coefficient of friction was established as a constant by Amontons in 1699 but this is mainly true for metals in dry sliding. Polymer sliding is dominated by adhesional interactions thereby rendering the coefficient of friction a non-constant. Several do’s and don’ts in polymer tribology will be revealed and a scientific/technological solution for very low polymer friction will be served. Without lubrication, of course. Ion Marius Sivebaek works with tribology in both Industry and Academia. This ensures that the tribology is well looked after scientifically and at the same time that it is used in the real world, in a high volume production. Advances in wear and friction solutions Erik Schwartz, Staff Scientist, SABIC Sometimes neat resins may not provide the performance needed in term of strength, fatigue or wear. SABIC’s Specialties’ LNP™ compounds portfolio is based on a variety of reinforced and internally lubricated thermoplastic compounds to address such needs. In this contribution, we will present internally lubricated solutions with an emphasized on our fully compatibilized olefinic alloys which can serve as an alternative to PTFE based material and show that these can emulate the tribological performance and colorability of traditional lubricated materials while avoiding the use of PTFE. Erik Schwartz is Staff Scientist of LNP & Copolymers product line for SABIC’s Specialties business. He obtained his PhD in Polymer Science from the University of Nijmegen in 2010. Before joining SABIC he spent two years at the Scripps Research Institute in California and two years at Eindhoven University of Technology as a postdoctoral fellow. He has co-authored >30 peer-reviewed research papers, > 20 patent applications and a book chapter. His current focus is on developing lubricated and structural solutions as well as sustainable thermoplastic products |

Get in control of surface texture and protect functionality of your engineered products Stefan Rosén, Surface Metrology expert, Toponova ab
Surface deviations are the small-scale geometrical deviations that always occur during manufacturing. Since surface deviations significantly impact the functionality, reliability, and performance of engineered products and systems, these deviations must be controlled. Surface texture is the term in ISO GPS (Geometrical Product Specifications) used to specify and verify allowed surface deviations on drawings, using parameters with tolerances and the correct measurement method. This presentation provides an introduction to ISO GPS and the toolbox for surface texture Stefan Rosén is a surface metrology expert and a member of the Swedish Standardization Technical Committee 507, working group 06, focusing on ISO GPS: Metrology and Surface Texture. In 1995, he founded the knowledge-based company Toponova AB in Halmstad, Sweden. Since its inception, Toponova has been assisting leading manufacturing companies in the Nordic region by developing over 2,500 methods for managing and controlling surface quality in accordance with ISO standards |

KG The presentation will provide a brief overview of the influence of fillers and their respective orientation on wear and friction testing. Processing methods of articles, or samples do have an influence that will be exposed. Last but not least, mating materials and their surface have an influence on wear and friction testing that should be observed. |

PTFE is a PFAS that are very soon to be banned due to their negative impact on the environment. |
