Current Trends in Standards Related to Coatings, Corrosion and Cathodic Protection Birit Buhr, Chief Corrosion Specialist, European Energy ![]() Standards related to coatings, surface preparation, corrosion evaluations, and cathodic protection continue to evolve. Appointed national experts propose new technical recommendations, technical guidelines and standards, which is then evaluated within the appropriate technical committees. The presentation will provide information on the procedure on how standards are developed, and which standards that are currently being proposed and developed within the coating, corrosion and cathodic protection area within ISO. The presentation will also reflect on the quality of standards and the limitations of the system as well as – more importantly – the strength of standards. Ms. Birit Buhr, chief corrosion specialist with European Energy, +35 years of experience with corrosion and cathodic protection in all environments, certified cathodic protection specialist by AMPP, certificate 16132, Fellow in Institute of Corrosion, Member of ISO TC 35, ISO TC 107 and ISO TC 156, working as project manager and convenor for new standards on corrosion protection including cathodic protection. |

Corrosion Protection for Offshore Wind Structures: Challenges and Emerging Trends Jesper Lund Madsen, Lead Corrosion Specialist, Vattenfall ![]() The offshore wind industry is under increasing pressure to reduce costs while extending asset lifetimes. This creates new challenges for corrosion protection systems, which must ensure long-term structural integrity while supporting increasingly demanding economic targets. This presentation discusses key challenges and emerging trends in coating and cathodic protection systems for offshore wind foundations, including fabrication, lifetime extension, corrosion monitoring, and optimization of corrosion protection strategies. Based on practical experience from recent projects and operating assets, the presentation provides insights into how corrosion protection systems are evolving to balance the demands of future offshore wind developments. Bridging the gap from Qualification to Serial Production: Accelerating Coating Deployment in Offshore Wind Clara Perez Hornero, Lead Corrosion Specialist, Ørsted ![]() Implementing new coating solutions in the offshore wind industry is challenging, particularly when transitioning from smaller, one-off structures to serial production while maintaining high standards of quality and manufacturing efficiency. This presentation explores how close collaboration between end customers, fabricators, and coating suppliers, supported by targeted training and technical expertise, has accelerated this transition. The approach improved quality performance at the same time as targeting reduced cycle time. The lessons learned highlight the importance of structured requirements, competence development, and early technical engagement, while demonstrating how greater industry-wide standardization can deliver long-term benefits for both quality and manufacturing efficiency. I have worked in the Offshore wind industry for the past 7 years, my focus is supporting design, fabrication, and installation to achieve the most suitable corrosion protection for the specific project and the desired quality according to our specifications. In the past, I have worked with Hempel for 4 years, where I learned about coatings, formulations and testing. |

Coating condition monitoring using embedded sensors: laboratory and field applications Vadimas Verdingovas, Senior Scientist, Hempel A/S ![]() Electrochemical impedance measurements have become a standard method for assessing the performance of protective coatings. Embedded sensors extend this capability by enabling continuous monitoring, providing deeper insight into coating degradation processes than periodic inspections alone. This presentation highlights examples from both laboratory testing and field applications, where coating impedance is monitored alongside environmental parameters. The resulting data support long-term evaluation of coating performance, improve assessment of corrosion under insulation (CUI) risk, and demonstrate the value of continuous coating impedance measurements for condition-based asset management. Vadimas Verdingovas is a Senior Scientist at the Technology Centers, R&D Denmark at Hempel A/S. His primary focus is developing new setups and test methodologies based on electrochemical techniques and sensor technologies for evaluating coating performance in laboratory and field environments. |

Integrated corrosion-, cathodic protection-, and coating monitoring in offshore structures Lars Vendelbo Nielsen, Owner, MetriCorr Remote monitoring provides a continuous picture of corrosion and cathodic protection performance that cannot be obtained through periodic inspection alone. This presentation describes how corrosion probes, reference electrodes, current measurements, coupons and environmental sensors can be combined in an integrated remote monitoring system for offshore structures. Such sensors provide detailed information at selected locations, including corrosion rate, protection potential and changes in the surrounding environment. However, local measurements do not necessarily represent the condition of the complete structure. The presentation therefore also discusses methods for assessing coating degradation at structure level through the electrical response of the structure and its cathodic protection system. Together, sensor-based and structure-wide monitoring can support early detection, optimisation of protection and evidence-based lifetime assessment. Lars Vendelbo Nielsen is the founder and owner of MetriCorr, a Danish company specialising in corrosion and cathodic protection monitoring. His work focuses on electrical resistance corrosion measurement, remote monitoring and methods for assessing cathodic protection and coating condition. He develops patented monitoring technologies for pipelines, offshore wind foundations and other critical infrastructure. |

Applied Material Intelligence: Building the world's first terahertz company with focus on enabling better and faster development of coatings Simon Jappe Lange, CEO, Applied Material Intelligence (AMI) ![]() Coating failure is invisible until it isn’t — cracks, voids and corrosion build up beneath the surface long before they show. In this talk, I share the journey behind Applied Material Intelligence (AMI), a DTU spin-out built to finally make terahertz light a reliable industrial tool rather than a lab curiosity. I’ll cover why we chose to spin the technology out of DTU, how our terahertz cross-correlation approach works, and why it’s the first inspection method that is contactless, non-destructive, safe and scalable at once. Through concrete coatings examples — including work with Hempel — you’ll see how this changes the speed and confidence with which coating performance can be developed and verified. My talk sets the stage for Behnam, who follows immediately after with the underlying research and measurement results in depth. Simon Jappe Lange is Co-founder and CEO of Applied Material Intelligence (formerly GLAZE Technologies), the world's first dedicated industrial terahertz technology company with coating development focus, and Associate Professor heading the THz Innovation Lab at DTU Electro. He holds a PhD in terahertz photonics from DTU, with research stays at UC Santa Barbara and Stanford, and has authored 10 patents and secured more than 50M DKK in grants for terahertz sensing technology. |

Non-Destructive Evaluation of Marine Protective Coatings Using Terahertz Cross-Correlation Spectroscopy Behnam Mohammadi, PhD Fellow, DTU Chemical Engineering /CoaST ![]() Terahertz spectroscopy is an emerging non-destructive technique for the inspection and quality control of protective coatings. It enables non-contact measurement of coating thickness, assessment of coating uniformity, monitoring of curing and drying processes, and detection of hidden defects or subsurface corrosion. This presentation demonstrates how terahertz measurements can be applied to marine coating systems, supported by experimental results and data-analysis methods. The method offers a rapid, non-contact approach with potential use in quality control, maintenance planning, and evaluation of coating performance. Behnam Mohammadi is a PhD student at DTU Chemical and Biochemical Engineering and is affiliated with the Hempel Foundation Coatings Science and Technology Centre (CoaST). He holds BSc and MSc degrees in Materials Science and Engineering, and his research focuses on terahertz cross-correlation spectroscopy for non-destructive evaluation of marine protective coatings. |
